Project: Bottle tornado
The Bottle Tornado is designed to show young researchers in a playful, hands-on way that air is not nothing. The supposedly empty bottle contains air, which is made visible in the form of bubbles. These bubbles are created by a rotating motion. In the Bottle Tornado, air rises upward through the eye of the vortex. As a result, the rotating water can simultaneously flow downward along the edge of the bottle.
The adapter—which connects an empty bottle to a water-filled bottle with a screw cap, thereby making the experiment possible—is manufactured using the injection molding process. This process ensures high quality and allows for large production volumes. The material used for this is ABROFILL, a compound made of polypropylene and spruce fibers from local forests—that is, renewable raw materials.
The project is a local collaboration with Windaus Labortechnik: https://www.windaus.de/
