The BioReg project is pursuing a new, highly innovative approach to cell separation through the production of consumables based on additive manufacturing. The goal of the project is to develop complex and versatile 3D-printed structures whose surfaces are coated with functional elements (proteins). In this process, the proteins themselves are incorporated into the printing process (production of copolymers), eliminating the need for the agarose-based separation matrix previously used and allowing for the free design of the separation units’ geometry—suitable for cell separation—during the manufacturing process. The resulting functional structures—in the form of packing spheres and complex, self-twisted arrangements—are then biologically evaluated in freely combinable segments for the optional separation of various cell fractions in combination with the FABian® cell separation system, deployed, and developed into a marketable complete system. IBA can thus expand its proprietary cell separation technologies with an innovative variant and further consolidate its market position in this area.
